About Me

Creating Better Skin Every Day

After spending the last twenty years struggling with my skin, I decided that it was time to make some powerful changes. For starters, I went in and met with a dermatologist, who was very upfront with me about the nature of my skin. It was really interesting to talk with him about my treatment options, and before I knew it, I was getting treatments to help the problem. Within a few months, my skin looked brand new, and I knew it was all because of the help of my doctor. I wanted to spread the word about the power of dermatology, so check out my blog!

Skin Peels: What They Can And Cannot Do For Your Complexion

by Louis Harris

You have probably heard or read a lot about cosmetic dermatology. There are a number of procedures, all of which sound relatively painless next to the skin peel. There are things a skin peel can do for your skin that other procedures cannot, and then there are things the peel cannot do for your skin.

The Peel Temporarily Erases Fine Lines

If you really do not like the idea of injecting a toxin into your facial muscles or injecting fat or fake fillers into your face to plump wrinkles, then maybe you would like the affects of a peel. The glycolic acid of the peel lifts away dead and dry skin at the surface level which causes fine lines and wrinkles to temporarily disappear. The dry, dead skin is what causes these lines to appear deeper than they really are, so by peeling them away with acid, the lines and wrinkles underneath look less craggy and less deep.

Black Heads Disappear

Glycolic acid obliterates blackheads. All of those little black dots peppering the pores on your face will immediately make an exit when they encounter the acid. That is because blackheads are a mix of dirt, dead skin cells, and sebum, all of which react to chemical peels by pushing through the skin and becoming easily removable. The skin is also disinfected, which prevents more blackheads from developing for a while.

Pores Cannot Shrink

Sadly, glycolic peels cannot make large facial pores in your skin shrink. The pores will still be visible after you face has healed from the peel procedure. The only difference is that the blackheads that may have filled these big pores will be gone, making it seem as though the pores have shrunk even though they have not.

Permanent and Lasting Results Do Not Happen

If you want permanent and lasting results for your skin, that cannot happen with a peel. The peel will definitely clarify your skin and make it seem softer, smoother, more even, and evenly colored, but in another six months to a year, you would have to repeat the process. Still, most people argue that it beats injections or fillers because you get better results and you do not have to worry about facial paralysis or bits of the fillers floating around under the skin in your face. The only possible negative side effects you may incur are a painful red appearance like a bad sunburn, and an actual sunburn when you do not apply sunscreen daily after your procedure is complete.
